I grew up in a verbally and physically abusive home and naively went into a marriage at sixteen. My husband drank heavily in the early days and used me frequently as a punching bag. Once he stopped drinking, the physical abuse ended but the verbal existed until we divorced.
I wrote what life was like for me in poetry, in my book In My Shoes, My Poetic Journey from Abuse to Victory. I hope other women discover their voice and chronicle their own experiences. Poetry gives victims/survivors the opportunity to discuss difficult situations without airing all of your intimate details. Poetry gives the reader the opportunity to read one poem or several poems at their own pace without being locked to the specific page. The reader is in control of how much of the darkness they can handle . http://www.lyncrainpoet.com/
I’ve included a link to an excellent list of books about domestic violence if you want to read more about this crisis.
