Doleful as an adjective is expressing sorrow; mournful.
I’ve chosen a poem I wrote about my grandson. We raise our children to believe they can do anything but sometimes that fearlessness goes to far. Johnny had ridden a dirt bike for years but like all boys wanted a bigger and faster bike. He worked hard and saved for the bike. 24 hours after he purchased it, that bike killed him.
I’m still in mourning. We’re all still in mourning. I think we’ll always be.

It doesn’t get any easier without you. I was standing in the kitchen looking at the school pictures on the book case and began crying. There won’t be a new school picture but then I realized with the distance learning I probably want be changing any school pictures. I cried even harder. Everything Gram’s always taken for granted is changed. The biggest change of all is you’re not here.
Your friends are struggling with the distance learning, no football games as of yet. I would give anything to hear you bitching about all the stuff happening right now.
Your chimes were active this morning… the wind was coming from the northeast. Just like where you used to be from Grandma.
Your sisters both have their own places now. I’m putting stuff together for them both. Grandma won’t need all of this stuff once she moves. It’s time to downsize. Or as your Dad would crap… crap.. Grandma has too much crap.
that human threw a horrendous fit it takes patience to learn how to knit our skill evolves with time unlike a spinning dime our project increases with each sit
I’ve tried several times to learn how to knit. She said,” it’s so easy.” Yup, I dropped more stitches and had more tangled messes. My project became a Christmas tree decoration. I left the needles with what I had done then cut the yarn and crocheted the socks instead.
Second attempt was a scarf, with her famous words it’s so easy. Another uneven mess and constantly picking up stitches. I gave her my needles and the yarn. I made her a crocheted hat and she finished my scarf.
According to a new report, more than 7,000 healthcare workers worldwide have died from treating patients with Covid-19. The two countries with the most deaths among medical professionals are Mexico (1,320) and the United States (1,077), followed at a distance by UK (649) and Brazil (634).
Those are large numbers, and the loss of medical personnel in areas that are under-served can be devastating.
If you wonder why medical facilities are so careful screening patients, there’s a good reason for their concern. They want to live through this, too.
Woohoo, this prompt gives me the opportunity to share Leonard Cohen. Thank you Jim.
Cohen shared a common passion with me, we love writing poetry. The Spice-Box of Earth helped expand the audience for Cohen’s poetry, helping him reach out to the poetry scene in Canada, outside the confines of McGill University. The book also helped Cohen gain critical recognition as an important new voice in Canadian poetry.
His styles vary so much in his poetry.
Waiting for Marianne from “Flowers for Hitler”
I have lost a telephone with your smell in it I am living beside the radio all the stations at once but I pick out a Polish lullaby I pick it out of the static it fades I wait I keep the beat it comes back almost alseep
Did you take the telephone knowing I’d sniff it immoderately maybe heat up the plastic to get all the crumbs of your breath
and if you won’t come back how will you phone to say you won’t come back so that I could at least argue
Silence
and a deeper silence

“Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.”—Leonard Cohen.
“Judy Collins recalls that when she first met him, he said he couldn’t sing or play the guitar, nor did he think “Suzanne” was even a song:
And then he played me “Suzanne” … I said, “Leonard, you must come with me to this big fundraiser I’m doing” … Jimi Hendrix was on it. He’d never sung [in front of a large audience] before then. He got out on stage and started singing. Everybody was going crazy—they loved it. And he stopped about halfway through and walked off the stage. Everybody went nuts. … They demanded that he come back. And I demanded; I said, “I’ll go out with you.” So we went out, and we sang it. And of course, that was the beginning of an incredible musical career.”
Underappreciated album for me really made me think about this a good share of today, I finally decided on Bon Jovi’s 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit. iI’s full of cathartic songs that came from the soul ,and not shooting from the groin. Unfortunately, the album release happened at a very difficult time in the group’s career. In and Out of Love is the only song that seemed to have faired the best on the album.
Bon Jovi is an American rock band formed in 1983 in Sayreville, New Jersey.” Bon Jovi has released 14 studio albums, five compilations and three live albums. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling American rock bands,”~ Wikipeida.
“John Francis Bongiovi Jr. (born March 2, 1962), known professionally as Jon Bon Jovi, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, philanthropist, and actor.”
The wait is over!! Time once again for SoCS where the lovely Linda writes and I re-write “Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “-tion.” Find a word that ends with “tion.” Bonus points if you start your post with it. Have fun!” Yeah Buddy. Bo- to the -nus. Or just BONUS!! 🙂 To join in the fun and frolic rules and ping back.
Fruition.. today’s goal is fruition. Enough, stalling is over. The goal is to organize the garage today so we can get what needs to go up for sale is set up in the garage. Our car is going to sit outside in the driveway for a bit.
Anticipation for me anyway: Exciting news Mik and Eddie finally have their own place so now I can mail packages. I didn’t want to send anything to her mothers. I have stacks upstairs for both granddaughters to mail since both girls now have their own place. It’s been long over due that Gramma thin out all this stuff.
Cooperation, I’m very thankful for a good friend who’s helping me with all the heavy crap today while Vic is out with a perspective insurance client. Yes, he’s masked and taking precautions.
I didn’t want to miss another Saturday stream of consciousness so I’m rushing a bit so I can get dressed and get this revolution going or should I say major re-construction project underway.
Satisfaction , Ruth Bader Ginsburg, served women well. And I want/need to take a moment to recognize her for everything she has done. Ginsburg’s death represents another loss from the ranks of people who have made “serious law and order a mission of their lives. I feel such a deep loss. It know it was a lot to put on a woman of her age to keep us safe and functioning as a constitutional democracy. But she understood our trust in her and took it in stride. Already, male idiots are touting the overturn of Roe vs. Wade. WTF?????
I know when they initially weren’t sure if the cancer growth was in pancreas I immediately thought of Ginsburg’s battle. She definitely gave cancer a run for its money. She was my hero.
I’m grateful that my growth was removable. I’m staying positive that the doctor got it all and I can move forward. But if isn’t than I’m going to fight as strongly as she did.
In the past I’ve mentioned Eleanor Roosevelt was my inspiration. I should have added Ruth Ginsburg as well. She never stopped fighting to the end.
Hopefully, her wishes will be honored that her position will remain vacant until we have new leadership. Women, this isn’t fiction, everything women have struggled to gain is at risk. Our votes matter. Biden/Harris are the only solution to stopping this dictator.
I’m done with hearing millennials pointing fingers saying it’s our mess. Well guess what the future is also going to be your nightmare. I know my generation has made a lot of mistakes, but I also know you’ll be making them too.
Do I like Biden, no I don’t. But I do like Harris. I’m also realistic enough to know that after the Hilary nightmare we won’t have a woman leader for many ions so I’m practical enough to push for having a woman Vice-President.
So vote or you’re one of the pussy grabbing silent supporters. If he’s re-elected than what happens is on you not me because I didn’t blow this situation off.
If you’re supportive of this adminstration count your blessings because they’re not going to last because change will occur if not this election the next one. In the meantime, well I said my peace… and change doesn’t frighten me… but will you handle it as well. They don’t call me the iron woman for nothing and it’s more than just my battles with cancer.
1974 Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot was released the summer after I graduated. It was # 1 in the US, the only Lightfoot album to accomplish that honor. The album marked the pinnacle of Lightfoot’s acoustic folk country blend before he embarked on an increasing use of electronic instruments.
I owned the song Sundown as a 45, but then I bought the album. Then I owned it again in cassettes, and then in cd.
I can see her lyin’ back in her satin dress In a room where ya do what ya don’t confess Sundown you better take care If I find you beenn creepin’ ’round my back stairs Sundown ya better take care If I find you been creepin’ ’round my back stairs
She’s been lookin’ like a queen in a sailor’s dream And she don’t always say what she really means Sometimes I think it’s a shame When I get feelin’ better when I’m feelin’ no pain Sometimes I think it’s a shame When I get feelin’ better when I’m feelin’ no pain
I can picture every move that a man could make Getting lost in her lovin’ is your first mistake Sundown you better take care If I find you been creepin’ ’round my back stairs Sometimes I think it’s a sin When I feel like I’m winnin’ when I’m losin’ again
I can see her lookin’ fast in her faded jeans She’s a hard lovin’ woman, got me feelin’ mean Sometimes I think it’s a shame When I get feelin’ better when I’m feelin’ no pain Sundown you better take care If I find you been creepin’ ’round my back stairs Sundown you better take care If I find you been creepin’ ’round my back stairs Sometimes I think it’s a sin When I feel like I’m winnin’ when I’m losin’ again
My second Lightfoot album was Summertime Dreams. My favorite song was the Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald. I just loved the storytelling ballad.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came early
The ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most With a crew and good captain well seasoned Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ship’s bell rang Could it be the north wind they’d been feelin’?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound And a wave broke over the railing And every man knew, as the captain did too, T’was the witch of November come stealin’ The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait When the gales of November came slashin’ When afternoon came it was freezin’ rain In the face of a hurricane west wind
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin’ Fellas, it’s too rough to feed ya At seven p.m., a main hatchway caved in, he said Fellas, it’s been good to know ya The captain wired in he had water comin’ in And the good ship and crew was in peril And later that night when ‘is lights went outta sight Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Does any one know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searchers all say they’d have made Whitefish Bay If they’d put fifteen more miles behind ‘er They might have split up or they might have capsized They may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wives and the sons and the daughters
Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings In the rooms of her ice-water mansion Old Michigan steams like a young man’s dreams The islands and bays are for sportsmen And farther below Lake Ontario Takes in what Lake Erie can send her And the iron boats go as the mariners all know With the gales of November remembered
In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed, In the maritime sailors’ cathedral The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee Superior, they said, never gives up her dead When the gales of November come early
I’ve received many albums over the years but this one brings back an special memory. Keep in mind this is before the internet. My Grandma didn’t drive nor did she actually go into stores so the fact that she pulled this off was pretty cool. Grandma called my friend Shar and asked for help. Grandma wanted to give me a gift I would truly love. Shar didn’t live very far from my grandparents so she went and picked up the money and went to the record shop downtown and got the album I was saving to buy.
It was my 14th birthday and the last thing I expected from my grandmother was an album. I never expected to get Steppenwolf Live. I squealed and jumped up and down like a crazy person.
Steppenwolf Live was a collection of recordings from a concert early in 1970 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium by Steppenwolf staged in support of their 1969 album Monster.
“”Hey Lawdy Mama” and “Magic Carpet Ride” are banded together as a single track, with a total running time of 7:13. A differently edited version of “Hey Lawdy Mama”, incorporating a fade-out instead of the segue, was released as a single. The songs “Twisted” and “Corrina, Corrina” are also studio versions which were EQ‘d and given some delay effects to match the actual live recordings and overdubbed with audience sounds at the beginning and ending of the songs” ~ Wikipeida.
I loved Magic Carpet Ride and Born to Be Wild. I played those two songs so much my grandmother wouldn’t let me bring the album when I came to visit her. She was sick of hearing them over and over after a couple of weeks.
Born to Be Wild
Get your motor runnin’ Head out on the highway Lookin’ for adventure And whatever comes our way Yeah Darlin’ go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into spaceI like smoke and lightning Heavy metal thunder Racin’ with the wind And the feelin’ that I’m under Yeah Darlin’ go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into spaceLike a true nature’s child We were born, born to be wild We can climb so high I never wanna dieBorn to be wild Born to be wildGet your motor runnin’ Head out on the highway Lookin’ for adventure And whatever comes our way Yeah Darlin’ go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into spaceLike a true nature’s child We were born, born to be wild We can climb so high I never wanna dieBorn to be wild Born to be wild
“Born to Be Wild by Mars Bonfire, which is the stage name of Dennis Edmonton. He wasn’t a member of Steppenwolf, but his brother Jerry was the band’s drummer. Bonfire wrote a few other songs for Steppenwolf as well, including “Ride With Me” and “Tenderness.”
Explaining how he came up with the song, Bonfire said: “I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard one day and saw a poster in a window saying ‘Born to Ride’ with a picture of a motorcycle erupting out of the earth like a volcano with all this fire around it. Around this time I had just purchased my first car, a little secondhand Ford Falcon. So all this came together lyrically: the idea of the motorcycle coming out along with the freedom and joy I felt in having my first car and being able to drive myself around whenever I wanted. ‘Born To Be Wild’ didn’t stand out initially. Even the publishers at Leeds Music didn’t take it as the first or second song I gave them. They got it only because I signed as a staff writer. Luckily, it stood out for Steppenwolf. It’s like a fluke rather than an achievement, though.”” ~ https://www.songfacts.com/facts/steppenwolf/born-to-be-wild
Magic Carpet Ride
I like to dream, yes, yes Right between the sound machine On a cloud of sound I drift in the night Any place it goes is right Goes far, flies near To the stars away from hereWell, you don’t know what We can find Why don’t you come with me little girl On a magic carpet rideWell, you don’t know what We can see Why don’t you tell your dreams to me Fantasy will set you freeClose your eyes girl Look inside girl Let the sound take you awayLast night I hold Aladdin’s lamp So I wished that I could stay Before the thing could answer me Well, someone came and took the lamp awayI looked Around A lousy candle’s all I foundWell, you don’t know what We can find Why don’t you come with me little girl On a magic carpet rideWell, you don’t know what We can see Why don’t you tell your dreams to me Fantasy will set you freeClose your eyes girl Look inside girl Let the sound take you away
Released in September 1968, Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” became one of rock’s first songs to open with an extended passage of guitar distortion. The eerie prologue lasts 20 seconds and includes chugging electronic tones before dissolving into the song’s rhythmic power chords and blues-rock vocal. The timing of the longer guitar distortion in Magic Carpet Ride after Hendrix’s Foxey Lady’s short guitar distortion set the bar for heavy metal bands.
